John 8:1-8 (ESV)
8 1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” 6 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground.
I was with a group of ladies yesterday for some women's ministry training. We were given this passage and 3 others in which Jesus interacted with women and then, we were asked the following questions:
#1. How does Jesus show unconditional love to the woman?
#2. In what ways is Jesus pressured not to show love?
#3. How do you think the woman felt in response to Jesus?
Let's look into this familiar story of the woman caught in adultery and answer these questions together. According to Wikipedia, unconditional love is love without limitations. Jesus demonstrated love without limitations when He pointed out to her and her accusers that everyone is a sinner. None of us are blameless. We have all fallen short of God's glory. She was no more unrighteous than those who brought her to Jesus. Jesus also made it clear to her that He did not condemn her either. John 3:17 says, God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order for the world through Him to be saved. Obviously, the scribes and Pharisees were the ones pressuring Jesus. They even used the Law of Moses as ammunition in their attack. I cannot imagine the relief the woman must have felt as she walked away from Jesus. He saved her life. He valued her.
What should we take away from this story today? To whom do you relate most in the story? I'm going to leave these for you to answer, but I pray you won't leave this page without gleaning what God has especially for you.
