James 1:6-7 (NLT)
6 But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. 7 Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.
My summer reading has led me to another book by Hannah Whitall Smith. You may remember, I have mentioned her in the past as the author of The God of All Comfort. Presently, I am reading The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life...the abridged version. It excites me to read books whose authors wrote decades ago even before I was born. Although their conveniences were fewer, their struggles and spiritual questions were the same as mine and in all truthfulness, the answers haven't changed one bit. God's Word is still the truth and should still be our "go to" for wisdom and guidance.Hannah offers these guidelines for seeking God's guidance:
How is God's guidance to come to us? How shall we be able to know His voice? In four ways and by the test of harmony; His voice will always be in harmony with itself, no matter in how many ways He speaks. If God tells me something in one voice, He cannot possibly tell me the opposite in another voice. 1)The Scriptures. 2)Convictions of our own higher judgment. It's not enough just to feel led. 3)Providential Circumstances. Has God opened the door? 4)Inward expressions of the Holy Spirit on our minds. We must be cautious not to find our answers in other than our Lord. It is easy to want to trust another source as all wise. Carefully heed Hannah's words about God's voice always being in harmony with itself.
In what area are you seeking guidance today? Is it time to move forward? Do you need to turn and go back the direction from which you came? Or do you just need to stay put until His voice calls you out?
Divine guidance has been promised. If you seek it. you will receive it. ~Hannah W. Smith
